The Council are looking at measures to reduce coach and HGV parking on Roedean Road

RRA are very concerned about traffic and pedestrian safety on Roedean Road in relation to large vehicles parking, often nose to tail on the road.

In 2016 RRA employed a leading firm of Consultants, WSP,  to look at our concerns and their report demonstrated beyond doubt that there is a real danger to traffic and pedestrians when a large vehicle is parked on the western stretch of Roedean Road above the bus stops.   In particular they demonstrated that on this stretch of road there was insufficient space for two HGV vehicles travelling along the road to pass without use of the pedestrian reserve and without having to move with extreme caution.   This is particular relevant because of the regular movement of coaches on the road and the daily bus route of the 47 and at the weekends the 27.

In response to our report the Council are now taking a proactive course which could prohibit such vehicles parking on the western stretch of Roedean Road, from the Cliff Road to the Bus Stop midway along, this section being narrower than the rest of the road.  For other vehicles along this section, low tariff payment parking would be introduced with a “no return within a certain number of hours” condition.  The Council are also looking to introduce double lines on parts of the northern side of the road and also opposite the two entrances to Roedean Way on the south side of the road.

The Council is still under pressure to find alternative coach and HGV spaces in the city, despite the mid-week unused capacity in Madeira Drive coach park;  and as a result it will take time to get everything agreed and for change to be implemented on the ground.  However the Council have given RRA assurances that this matter is now a priority for them.

Hopefully it will not be a major accident that accelerates a safe solution and you can be assured that RRA will continue to put regular pressure on the Council for positive action as soon as possible.
